A hallmark of healthy skin is an even complexion. Oftentimes, though, at-home skincare regimens aren’t potent enough to reach the deeper layers of the skin where underlying hyperpigmentation thrives.

An IPL Photofacial is a non-invasive light therapy that uses intense pulsed light to heat and destroy pigmented cells in the deeper layers of the skin.
This selectively eliminates brown spots, redness, and broken blood vessels without damaging the surface.

The primary advantage of intense pulsed light over traditional ablative lasers is the preservation of the skin’s surface. You receive deep cellular correction while keeping the epidermal barrier intact.

Safety and efficacy rely heavily on your natural skin tone. We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type during your consultation.

Use our interactive virtual consultation tool to explore the medical aesthetic procedures that might best fit your unique concerns.

Your pre-treatment habits directly dictate how your skin reacts to the light pulses.

Your Houston IPL Photofacial begins with your provider cleansing the target area to remove any residual oils.
We apply a clear, cooling gel to the skin to enhance light penetration and protect the epidermis. You are given dark protective eyewear. We calibrate the device settings to match your specific target concerns—adjusting the wavelength to hit either red blood vessels or brown melanin. The handpiece is passed sequentially across your skin. The device emits bright flashes of light. Most patients describe the physical sensation as a quick, hot rubber band snapping against the skin. We wipe away the gel and apply a calming barrier cream.

The correction happens in specific physical stages.
There is no formal physical downtime required. You can drive yourself back to work immediately after leaving our Houston plastic surgery clinic.
Expect mild swelling and a sensation similar to a light sunburn. You can apply cool compresses to the area.
You can resume wearing makeup to cover the darkening spots.
Your normal skincare routine can resume once all flaking has stopped.
Your skin will be highly vulnerable to UV rays while it sheds the pigmented cells.

Pricing for an IPL Photofacial relies strictly on the physical work required to clear your pigmentation. We evaluate the severity of your sun damage, the surface area being treated, and the total number of sessions needed to break down the cells. Treating just the cheeks costs less than treating the face, neck, and chest simultaneously. The clinical workload changes. We refuse to issue quotes over the phone.
Quoting a fee without seeing the depth of the pigment is a guessing game. We do not guess. During your consultation, we observe exactly how your skin reacts and give you a firm, hard number with no hidden fees. You leave with the exact price. We hand you a printed document detailing the session costs and any recommended medical-grade skincare required for your recovery.

Prior to your IPL Photofacial Houston patients will first meet with a Studio Essex provider for a one-on-one consultation. We take the time to get to know you—your goals, medical history, skin type, and tone.
Our team of aesthetic specialists collaborate on every patient case to best advise you on the best options for addressing their concerns. We build a highly personalized treatment plan that may include a combination of both IPL photofacials and other aesthetic treatments to achieve the best possible results.
Before you receive an IPL photofacial Houston aestheticians will thoroughly clean your skin and apply eye protection. Once numb, we will glide the IPL handpiece across the treatment area, distributing the light into the targeted pigmentation and vessels.
Once completed, we can schedule you for follow-up IPL photofacials or any other complementary procedures you'd like to enhance the effects of your initial photofacial and promote healthy, youthful skin.

The IPL Photofacial is a unique facial rejuvenating treatment that utilizes the power of light energy to correct hyper-pigmented skin around your treated areas, typically the face, neck, and décolletage.
Many laser treatments damage the surface of the skin and require a long recovery period. The IPL Photofacial, however, uses different wavelengths of intense pulsed light to penetrate the deeper layers of your skin and target hyper-pigmentation. All without damaging your skin. The pigmented cells simply absorb the heat from the light energy, die off, and are naturally eliminated from the body, leaving you with an even complexion.
The average cost of an IPL Photofacial in Houston typically starts at $350. At Studio Essex, we accept cash and all major credit cards. We are also happy to offer financing through CareCredit® for patients.
If you are planning on getting an IPL treatment in Houston, it is imperative that you avoid prolonged sun exposure, topical retinol/retinoic acid, and antibiotics for 2 weeks prior to treatment. This is a precaution that helps prevent sun burns and complications from treatment. Plus, you cannot receive treatment if you have a sunburn!
Before your IPL Photofacial treatment begins, Dr. Downey or Dr. Bullocks will prepare your skin by thoroughly cleaning the desired treated area. This will ensure you will remain as comfortable as possible throughout the entirety of your treatment. Once numb, Dr. Downey or Dr. Bullocks will lay you down on one of our comfortable procedure tables and provide you with protective eyewear. They will then start applying bursts of intense pulsed light onto your desired treated area.
While many patients are fairly comfortable throughout this procedure, most describe the feeling as being snapped with a rubber band. Each treatment session typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
Because the photofacial is a minimally invasive treatment, there is no formal downtime or recovery period associated with the procedure. Most patients can return to their normal daily activities, including work, following their IPL Photofacial treatment. Following treatment, many patients experience their skin being red, swollen, and sensitive to the sun for the next few days. This is normal and typically resolves on its own. Dr. Downey and Dr. Bullocks advise moisturizing your face and applying medical-grade sunscreen daily to ensure a smooth and swift recovery.
While many patients may start to see the results of their IPL Photofacial after just one treatment, Dr. Downey and Dr. Bullocks typically recommend a series of three to six treatments spaced a few weeks apart to achieve ultimate results.
Not everyone is a candidate for IPL, which is why it is so important to have an initial consultation beforehand with a trained medical provider to ensure it is the best form of treatment for your skin concerns. Good candidates for the IPL photofacial are in good general health and have realistic expectations of the results they can expect from their treatment. Ideal candidates for the IPL Photofacial often desire to treat the following concerns:
